In September 2012, the WSP Structures was appointed by Lend Lease Queensland as Structural Consulting Engineers for the multi-deck car park buildings at the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) campus, being the first stages of a 20 hectare greenfield integrated health campus development.
There are two separate car park structures - 600 car spaces for the new Private Hospital (currently under construction for Ramsey Healthcare) and 2,700 spaces for the new Public Hospital facility to be constructed by Lend Lease.

The project presents many challenges, both technical and in terms of delivery programme. The new buildings are to be designed in accordance with the SCUH guidelines to provide a minimum design life of 70 years and must comply with the Queensland Government’s requirement for all SCUH buildings to conform to Type 4 Construction (‘Post Disaster Function’). These requirements demand extremely stringent and onerous design criteria and high standards of construction. The poor soil conditions prevailing at the site add complexity to pile design for the strict earthquake conditions in particular, and the aggressive coastal environment (with the Hospital located only 2 km from the Pacific Ocean surf) has significant implications on structure design and detailing.

The five and eight level building envelopes utilise formed cast-insitu post-tensioned concrete suspended floors giving a total floor area in excess of 93,000 sqm. The external cladding is modularised with a face-fixed integrated crashrail and façade system; an extremely efficient design that optimises the car parking zones without any loss of floor area at the building edge.
