The MPavilion’s is a temporary structure built to host a program of talks, workshops, performances and installations during the months of October to February. This structure was the inaugural pavilion, with a different pavilion constructed each year.

The MPavilion is a simple design with a 12mx12m steel structure with a glazed roof with a fully automated outer panels or ‘skin’.

To meet the architectural intent for the pavilion, WSP Structures worked closely with the architect Sean Godsell. A key requirement was for the steel columns supporting the roof to be kept slender and for the connections to be concealed. By creating a portalised structure between the columns and roof beams in both directions, the steel columns were able to be kept slender without introducing any bracing to the building. The connections were offset from the node points to allow for a concealed bolted connection. The operable screens that formed the roof and walls were the main source of wind load on the structure and as such a monitoring system was put in place to ensure that they were closed when winds exceeded 80km/hr.
