Swinburne Uni Atrium

Hawthorn Campus VIC

Year Completed // late 2006
Client // Swinburne University
Architect // DesignInc
Project Value // AU$2.2M
Location // 48-52 William Street, Hawthorn VIC

The Swinburne University Atrium was designed to provide all-weather protection for users of the university’s 1970’s-contructed plaza, as well reducing the quantity of moisture leaking into the basement car park located directly below.

A lightweight steel structure was fabricated to span between the Library and the Business and Arts building; this structure supports inflatable ETFE (Ethylene Tetafluoro Ethylene) pillows, which form the plaza roof. As the space is enclosed at each end by a vertically layered wall, the plaza can also be used as a venue for functions, gatherings and graduations.
